Revenge of the Red Baron 7pm - Revenge of the Red Baron stars a young and troubled Tobey Maguire as "Jimmy", grandson of the World War 1 Ace who shot down the titular tyrant of the skies. For no apparent reason other than to provide "action" and a misleading title, the spirit of the Red Baron possesses a toy plane to kill Jimmy's Gramps, (Mickey Rooney) even though the guy's already dying of terminal oldness.

Ghetto Blaster 8:30pm - When Travis, a middle-aged recalcitrant Vietnam Vet, returns home to visit his parents, he soon finds that his old hood is teeming with the sort of criminal activity and gang warfare usually reserved for a lower class of people... Instead of taking it lying down he does what Nam Vets everywhere were doing in the 80's; uses his army training to clean up the streets at home! Ghetto Blaster!

R.O.T.O.R. 10pm - Robotic Officer Tactical Operation Research. A prototype robot intended for crime combat escapes from the development lab and goes on a killing rampage. Why is it that every time they build a crime fighting robot it does exactly the opposite of its intended use? Because that's what makes bad movies good! And in Texas, everything is bigger and badder!

It's once again that magical time of year when every good little girl and boy recieves gift-wrapped roundhouse kicks to the face. You on the other hand run a decent chance of winning some sweet Chucksmas presents.
Atthe same time, to assuage the guilt of promoting this right-wing-conservativechristian’s distinctly entertaining films, we use the opportunity to raise money for an awesomeorganization he would hate, namely Equality Texas, an LGBT rights group in Norris’s home state.

The Awful Hour - 6:00 - You know the drill, salvaged VHS trash of the lowest, most entertaining caliber.

Silent Night Deadly Night 2 (1987) - 7:00 -No Chuck here, this is our seasonal nod to the Santa Slasher genre. For the first time we're gracing the Sunset's big screen with the dancing eyebrows of our favorite evil Santa's deranged younger brother. Not since the 80's have two movies fit so neatly into on hilarious package.

Code of Silence (1985) - 8:30 -Norris makes his first appearance of the night as a Chicago cop at odds with his entire department. Refusing to protect a crooked fellow officer, Chuck is hung out to dry by the rest of the department and has to battle both the Italian and Columbian mafias for control of the streets. Well okay, he does have the help of a rickety robot, but that hardly counts.

Hellbound (1994) - 10:00 - Believe it or not Norris plays a Chicago cop once again in our second Chucksmas feature. This time he and his caricature of a sidekick are off to Israel on the trail of a killer who turns out to be a demon imprisoned by Richard the Lionheart in the 14th Century. What?!? Yep, Chuck and ~~Axel~~ Calvin are after a demon who is determined to bring about the Armageddon!

Night of Terrors 6: The Final Night of Terrors

This October 24th, Kung Fu Grindhouse delves once again into our charnel house of decrepit zombie movies for Night of Terrors 6: The Final Night of Terrors.

This year we dig into the (mostly) 80's for a night of threequels beginning with:

Zombie 3 (1988): An entertainingly atrocious film directed by no less than three (3!) Italian splattermeisters. Zombie 3 is at times confusing, comforting and gory as all hell but in every way it is wonderful. From zombie birds to flying severed zombie heads it is a sight to behold as a terrorist steals a biological weapon and finds out the hard way just what he's gotten into. Forced to work together by a growing zombie epidemic, a group of vacationers and some army buddies hole up an an old hotel while the world comes crashing down.

Day of the Dead (1985): More military mania as the world continues to fall apart under overwhelming zombie doom. In a subterranean military base, the army goons and the civilian clowns are at each other's throats. As George Romero's thin critique of United Statesian political squabbling and culture war plays out in darkened hallways and freight elevators, the dead are waiting to snack on the winner.

Return of the Living Dead 3 (1993): When disgruntled Gen-Xer Curt's girlfriend Julie is killed in a motorcycle accident, he sneaks onto his dad's Army base and resurrects her with the zombifying chemical Trioxin. The rest is a debacle of slapstick as Curt tries to keep Julie hidden from Chicano Gangs, the Police and his grumpy dad while Julie attempts to "come to terms" with her condition. While not quite the allegorical opus of its predecessors, ROTLD3 piles on the bleak and fun zombie gorror.

Mmmmmmm Hmmmmmm. That's right, we'll see you on October 24th at 7pm. This is a popular show so seating usually goes fast!

The Vindicator (1986) - 7:00pm - Every scientific research lab has a snitch. Y'know, the person who gets all whiney just when some ethically questionable research starts to yield promising results? Well Carl is just one such punk, but his coworkers are not about to allow their success to be thwarted by his moral hang-ups.

Joysticks (1983) – 8:30pm – There’s nothing quite as sinister and threatening to the integrity of traditional United Statesian Christian culture than a video arcade is there? When Joe Don Baker declares a crusade to shut down the arcade it’s time to declare war right back as only the 80’s can do, with punk rockers, topless girls and arcade games.

Prodigal Son (1981) – 10:00pm – When he discovers that all of his opponents have been paid to lose, Yuen Biao heads out to find a real kung fu teacher. What he finds instead are a couple of crazy brothers perpetually at each others throats. Well anyway, crazy brothers who know kung fu. Humor and hardcore fights from KFG standard-bearer Sammo Hung.

Captain America 2 (1979) - 8:30pm - In which Reb Brown dons Cap's outfit for a tasty romp through idiot-land and a bunch of friendly dogs. Crapping out hanglider and smashing motorbike on waterfall, lots of gunshots all the time and all the bad-guys intentions are broadcast over a public address system just before or just after they occur. Motorcycle helmet and pain means you thought it was TOO SOON FOR A SEQUEL?

Ninja Vengeance (1988) - 10:00pm - In which a white man comes to town and accidentally finds himself saving the Black residents from the Klan and white audience members from their guilty conscience. Fortunately our Magnificent Singular Amigo Samurai just happens to have brought his instructional manuals along for the big fight. Transforming himself into the titular Ninja, he takes vengeance, but not for the selfless reasons you would hope.

Student Bodies - 7:00pm - Long before Wes Craven's career tanked (which was pretty long ago) slasher movies (which Wes Craven was instrumental in defining) got mocked hardcore. In fact their shittyness was so mocked that they could be mocked shittily and it was still mockery. Got it?

Howling 2 - 8:30 - What wingnut French/Aussie director doesn't want to shoot his asinine nonsensical werewolf movie sequel off the cuff in Eastern Europe with a bunch of punkrockers and fake hair appliances? Sybil Danning was thinking the same thing when she signed up and tore her shirt off for this epic masterpiece of terrible celluloid perfection.

Drive - 10:00 - A former Stuntman cum director made an awesome kung fu movie starring the amazingly talented but sadly deadpan Mark Dacascos and a bunch of tired racist stereotypes. Not so oddly, if you are aware of the unfortunate bigotry, you can laugh at the ridiculousness of an otherwise awesome movie all the more knowing that you're smarter than that.

But that is what we strive for here at KFG, obscurity in content and context. It's what makes our little hearts beat with joy. This month, feature aside, is an event of profound proportions, witness:

Thank God It's Friday - 7PM - A cornucopia of characters converge on The Zoo, a swanky Los Angeles disco club where the Commodores are set to appear that night for a big dance contest. Oh goody! Laughter and merriment follow in a profuse and bubbly abundance of shitty fashion and tunes.

Megaforce - 8:30 - Barry Bostwick kicks the asceticism of the Carter era straight in the gonads with Reagan sized helping of fantasy techno boner military hardware. Watch misguided foreign interventions and war get fun and sparkly again!

Blood Fight (AKA Final Fight) - 10PM - Retired Japanese fighter Masahiro is looking for a disciple to carry on his legacy. When Chang Li the Vietnamese Cobra and reigning champion of Asian free fighting murders Masahiro’s new Chinese student in the ring, the teacher must get over his sense of failure and take revenge against this much larger, younger and ruthlesser opponent. Phoenetic English abounds in this Japanese/Hong Konginese masterpiece of cheese.

Six years and one more show to begin the seventh. Tonight is bound to be entertaining in a number of mostly objective ways. Quality is, this month as always, job number one here at Kung Fu Grindhouse.

Night of the Lepus - 7:00pm - It's been a while since we had a giant monster, or animals gone wild, so we thought it might be fun to combine the two. Fluffy bunny terror!

Tiger Claws II - 8:30 - Producer Jalal Merhi returns to the screen with his inflated ego flopped out for everyone to see. Cynthia Rothrock and Bolo Yeung appear in supporting roles which don't quite match up to the plotline in the first film.That hardly matters as Merhi and Rothrock entertain a painfully one sided relationship while tracking down the surprisingly less sinister than usual Yeung in the first installment of our High-Quality Bolo Double Feature.

Breathing Fire - 10:00 - Two brothers, one an adopted Vietnamese orphan, get involved in a criminal showdown between several Vietnam veterans. One of the 'Nam vets is their dad whose gang robs a bank and then must face off against another Vet on the other side of the law. A plethora of WTF moments follow in the finest schlocky fashion as Bolo Yeung tears up the screen once again.

Kung Fu Grindhouse considers itself a grave robber of sorts, sifting through the cinematic charnell house for dusty old tasty bits. After six years of unearthing the good stuff, we've started to develop a little cemetery of our own....
As we usually do on our anniversary, we dig through our own past and make the carcasses dance for your pleasure once again across the magic screen at the Sunset. This year we're going way back in our dismal history for some particularly delectable morsels of trash for you to feast your festering see-holes on. Bear witness........

The Impossible Kid at 7:00pm - Three foot secret Agent 00 strikes back at organized crime in this Filippino flick starring the diminutive Weng Weng. Little Weng works for Interpol and is stocked with scale versions of all the crimefighting hardware any leisure-suited miniature Casanova could need.

Microwave Massacre at 8:30pm - A gigantic microwave stars as itself and Jackie Vernon "stars" as Donald, a construction worker who gets so sick of his wife's nagging and lousy cooking that he kills her. Much to his chagrin, the remains end up in his former wife's favorite appliance and subsequently in the food supply.

Fist of the White Lotus at 10:00pm - A classic kung-fu tale of revenge taken to epic and absurd heights. Gordon Liu must defeat Pai Mei a man possessed of the surreal ghost technique and so evil he demonstrates his deadly skills on his own retainers. Liu must master the embroidery technique if he is going to get anywhere near Pai Mei's family jewels and settle the score.

Even we haven't seen any of these movies in years, this show is going to be Awesome! We'll be giving away some Anniversary presents, so don't miss out.

I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "Where's the usual barely witty and disparaging synopses of these films guys? C'mon!" Well the truth is that when I usually write these things, I've seen the films at least once, maybe twice already. This time however, Phill put together an almost totally secret show featuring a lineup that was a mystery even to me until practically the last minute. Unlike the shows I put together, I have total faith in my comrade's ability to concoct an unassailably rad cinematic assault to blow your mind. He has done so every single time in the past.
In this case, I have yet to see two of the films on the roster for March 21st, it is going to be as much a surprise for me as it is for you. That said, I put together a brief lineup roster with vague and mostly fabricated synopses:

Low Blow - 7:00 - Low budget “action” film starring Leo Fong as a private dick who doesn’t seem to care about his car, or parking it.

Ring of Steel - 8:30 - Watch Ren-Fair nerds fight each other to the death for your amusement. Feels good doesn’t it?

TC 2000 - 10:00 - Post-Apocalyptic sci-fi martial arts actioner starring Billy "Tae-Bo" Blanks, Bolo "Chinese Hercules" Yeung and Mathias "Tiny Head" Hues in wall to wall Terminator rip-off robo-fighting!

Hahahaha! This is going to be fantastic. See you then!

It Happened At the Worlds Fair - 7:00PM - Few people know that The King filmed a movie here in Seatown right down there at Seattle Center. Back then all those buildings were still shiny and full of naive optimism, the Soviets were still a terrifying prospect and riding the monorail didn't require treatment for smoke inhalation.

Terror Vision - 8:30PM - After falling asleep while watching old horror movies with his grandfather, Sherman Putterman discovers that the TV has zapped a giant monster into their home. The monster thrives on junkfood and TV. Woah dude, that's like, a totally deep metaphor, I'm going to need a while to process that one. Pop culture goes literally mad!

Ninja Silent Assassin - 10PM - "Possibly one of Godfrey Ho's more watchable ninja Frankenfilms." Ah hahahahahahahahahahaha!

Bring an extra napkin to the Sunset on February 21st, it's going to get messy.

As promised at our screening of Ip Man earlier this month, the Kung Fu Grindhouse crew is going to head out to the theater and see the sequel, Ip Man 2 this Friday Feb. 4th. We're meeting up at the Metro Cinema in the University District to see the 6:55 show.

But wait it gets better.

If people are into continuing our Grindhouse night on the town after Ip Man, we'll head on down to the College Inn Pub for a couple of beers, then a hike back up the Ave to the Grand Illusion where we'll watch Mako: The Jaws of Death at 11PM

If the showtime or theater for Ip Man 2 changes when the new releases come out this week, we'll update this post to keep you current.

This January 17th KFG returns to the Sunset with another round of salvage cinema and good times, or aren't those things one and the same?

Rollerboogie – 7pm – Lind Blair stars in this amazing and totally unique take on those crazy narcissistic flash in the pan phenomena of the post aquarian era known as “roller-skating”, and “disco” or some such nonsense. Be prepared for a glut of earnest emoting, cuddly heartwrenching David v. Goliath socio-economic parables and enough sparkles to make a hipster have an aneurism.

Death Spa – 8:30 – Oh the 80’s, the reactionary 80’s, a bitter and acrimonious decade insistent on defecating directly into the mouth of every communistical hippie it could lay its cocaine encrusted power-tie on. If ever there was a ubiquitous institution for the Reagan era besides all those other ones, you could hardly do without a health spa/club, preferably packed to the gills with hyperbolically coiffed trust-fundies. Then subject them all to an absurd premise which includes supernatural revenge from beyond the grave and you have a grand old time just waiting to happen.

Ip Man – 10pm – So one time, Japan invaded China and did a bunch of horrible stuff there, creating a 75 year legacy of cinematically recodified ineluctable Japanese cruelty and incompetence countered only by Chinese stoicism, excellence and perseverance in martial arts. The amazing Donnie Yen stars in this ambiguously historic but undeniably heroic tale of that period and some martial arts, most notably Wing Chun which he’s really good at.

Reptilicus at 7pm - This Danish monster movie from 1961 is regarded as one of the worst of its kind and subsequently became one of our favorites. Drilling for oil or something in the snow, some Danes hit a prehistoric monster and bring up a section of its tail. Placed in a bubbling protien solution the tail soon regenerates into a whole monster which terrorizes Copenhagen and can only be stopped by the US military!

Computer Beach Party at 8:30pm -In the mid 1980's someone in Galveston, Texas was plotting to make that balmy Gulf-Coast town the next go-to spot for movie making. As far as we know, this film is one of only two to actually make it to completion. Two beach bums use their homemade computer to invite hot-chicks and a totally rockin' band to their house in an effort to stop a real estate developer from privatizing the beach. To be honest, the fact that it is wholly independent from the mainstream movie scene produces a fairly unique spin on the classic 80's teen party movie formula. A humorously half-baked Texan spin.

Ninja Terminator at 10pm - Richard Harrison, one of KFG's mascots appears again as the Ninja Terminator, a man of unprecedented martial skill who must stop the evil ninja clan from possessing all three parts of the Golden Ninja Warrior. Teamed up with his buddy Tiger, will Ninja Terminator defeat the ruthless crab army? Will the unstoppable messenger robot prove to be unstoppable? And hey, who's this guy Silver Fox? Only Godfrey Ho and Dickie Harrison can say.

Come join us on November 22nd for another night of undiluted brilliance.

For our fifth year in a row we're returning to the Sunset Tavern in October with a full night of gut-munching zombie fare. As in the past, so in the future. Long before there were "zombie walks" and zombie TV shows, there was the international Amercan-Italian zombie exchange program. You make one, we'll make one, you make one.... And this was the age when there was no such thing as straight to video (much less DVD) so all these splatterfests played on the big screen. We're proud to bring 'em back.

Legion of the Night (1995) @ 7:00PM - The living dead return once again in the form of cybernetic assassins used to settle a mob war. Bill Hinzman, the original graveyard zombie from Night of the Living Dead (1968) who never got over his brief brush with fame returns in yet another low budget zombie flick. Here he is Doctor Bloom the man whose experiments with reanimating dead flesh lead to the creation of Cybernetic Zombie Assassins and unleashed a wave of bloodshed.

Hell of the Living Dead (1980) @ 8:30PM - This uber-trashy, barely coherent zombie flick was directed by Italian hackmaster extraordinaire Bruno Mattei whose films we take particular delight showing here at KFG. Also known by the creative title Night of the Zombies, this flick concerns a chemical plant disaster on the island of Papua New Guinea. The natives have begun to eat each other and a SWAT team fresh from a standoff with some terrorists is sent to investigate. Things immediately begin to fall apart as it becomes apparent that it's not just the natives who are eating people. Goofy, gross and absurd all at the same time, Hell of the Living Dead is as close as it comes to a classic at this low calibre.

City of the Living Dead (1980) @ 10:00PM - Also known by its more accurate title Gates of Hell, this film from splatter-maestro Lucio Fulci does in fact feature the gates of hell, or a gates of hell.... Anyway, a distraught priest hangs himself in a cemetery opening, you guessed it, some gates to hell which allows the cemetery's permanent residents to become somewhat less permanent. An intrepid reporter (what a hardy cinematic trope!) teams up with an concerned psychic in a race to close those damned gates before it's too late. Starring an incredible cast of genre actors from the golden age of Italian and U.S. horror, City of the Living Dead is a classic of zombie cinema.

Kung Fu Grindhouse returns on September 20th with another night of gutter classics:

Slithis (1978) aka Spawn of the Slithis @ 7:00pm - If you've ever heard of the true story surrounding the incidents at Love Canal in the late 70's already know what Slithis is about, sortof. In this case some sort of man made contamination creates a mutant creature that menaces the waterways of Venice, California. This flick is almost impossible to find on VHS, it never made it to DVD, but you get to see it here.

Body Melt (1993) @ 8:30 - Jumping ahead a decade and a half to Australia we find ourselves in a similar situation. A group of unscrupulous scientists decide to go ahead with a little trial run of some performance enhancing drugs. The result is nothing less than a goofy goo-fest that harkens to Peter Jackson's golden age or the film Street Trash. It's a pretty specific reference I know, but Body Melt is in a category shared with very few other films.

Warriors Two (1978) @ 10:00pm - And back to the late 70's where we find Sammo Hung Kam Bo at the helm of what turns out to be a veritable expose of Wing Chun style kung-fu. His friend the bank teller is being hunted by the murderers of a local politician. Since it's only a matter of time before they catch up he decides it's better to stand and fight with his friends* at his side. As one would expect from Sammo, brilliant martial arts mixed in with humor and an intriguing story combine to make this one of the best ones yet.
*Yes there are three of them total, but I guess women "don't count" and so it's called Warriors Two.

Slugs @ 7:00pm - Yes indeed, flesh eating slugs do in fact menace s small town in this trashy nature gone wild "classic" from 1988. Spanish director Juan Piquer Simon who also brought us Pieces succeeds once again in portraying humans as volatile, cruel and above all stupid frightened animals.

The Dirtbike Kid @ 8:30pm Peter Billingsley who you may be more familiar with as Ralphie in A Christmas Story plays a kid who re-enacts Herbie the Lovebug with a dirtbike. Hand in handle they manage to save the local hotdog stand from demolition in favor of a bank, and save his widowed mother from perpetual lonliness, whew what a metaphor.

The Buddhist Fist @ 10:pm Two brothers are raised separately and trained in kung fu only to find themselves at opposite sides of a deadly rivalry. Contradicts the Western notion that Buddhism is a peaceful self effacing faith whose followers somehow transcend worldly concerns. In fact as this film points out even Buddhists can be full of rage, vice and mindless vindictive hatred just like the rest of the world. Directed by Iron Monkey's Yuen Wo Ping!

Fans of Kung Fu Grindhouse:
Our favorite theater in Seattle needs our help! The Grand Illusion is a volunteer run, non-profit cinema in the U-District. As such they operate dangerously close tot he bottom line, and if they run out of money, they may have to close their doors.

The Grand Illusion is the only cinema in town that offers such a unique mix of films from trashy to classic to foreign to yes, even kung-fu. Simply put, it's amazing stuff you won't find anywhere else in Seattle.
On top of this they have the best ticket prices in town. You can see almost any movie for just 8 bucks, 7 bucks for students, and if you become a member, tickets are just five dollars! Becoming a member starts at just 30 bucks for a whole year.
We don't know what else to say to encourage you to help keep this totally unique and awesome cinema going, it would be a huge hit to local movie fans if they closed down. As supporters of all of Kung Fu Grindhouse's shenanigans, we think you understand the value of something like this.

We're going to be there this Tuesday July 27th to watch John Water's trashy classic Female Trouble at 9pm. In addition to our own ticket prices, we'll donate an extra five bucks to The Grand Illusion for every certifiable Kung Fu Grindhouse fan who buys a ticket to watch Female Trouble with us.

On July 19th we're back with another night of awesome cinema salvage:

Fiend Without A Face @ 7:00pm - A nuclear power plant in Canada causes “thoughts” to manifest physically as brain sucking brain monsters. A cold-war era monster classic with bumbling military, solitary army-scientist heroes and fainting women galore. We saw a trailer for this film back in the 80's and never forgot it. Finally, 20-odd years later it lives up to the flying brain monster hopes we had held on to for so long.

Space Hunters @ 8:30pm - Molly Ringwald stars in this visual smorgasbord science fiction from 1983. Something of a riff on popular space opera films of the time but much better than you would expect from a movie that has been almost totally forgotten. It was originally made for 3D in theaters, and the rich cinematography attests to that, but the costumes, props and sets are absolutely amazing.

Magnificent Butcher @ 10pm - Sammo Hung plays a butcher who runs afoul of a kung-fu school full of bad guys and has to defend himself. Sounds like a pretty typical plot for a kung fu movie, but it's livened up by Sammo's lightning fast kung-fu and witty humor. Widely considered one of his best.

The glorious Sunset Tavern had their ten year anniversary party the weekend before we did Blind Fury, and they got a nice writeup at Three Imaginary Girls. We managed to get an honorable mention as one of the Sunset's ongoing events.

For those of you who were at the last show and heard us announce the June date as the 21st, you are not crazy. Due to unforseen carpet replacement circumstances, KFG has been pushed back to the 28th. Same show different day. Check it out:

7pm - Men Behind the Sun: A Chinese war horror film about the Japanese occupation during World War II, this one has to be seen to be believed. Gruesome and gory to the maximum, you've been warned.

8:30pm - Mystery of Chessboxing: A young upstart must learn the mysterious "Chessboxing" style in order to defeat the Ghost Face Killer who has been terrorizing the countryside. Classic Chinese kung-fu from the 70's. I think some minor musical group might have written a song or two based on this film.

10pm - Blind Fury: Rutger Hauer is a blind Vietnam veteran who is trained in sword techniques during his recovery in Thailand. Upon his return to the States he fights crime, blind Vietnam veteran ninja style.
